Last Steps Doula

Frequently Asked Questions

If your question isn't answered here, that's what a first conversation is for.

Why would I need an end of life doula?+

An end-of-life doula offers time, presence, and expertise that's hard to find elsewhere in the medical system — someone whose only job is to walk beside you and the person you love, for as long as it takes. Maybe you have questions that haven't been answered. Maybe you live far away and want a trusted person there for support. Maybe there's family conflict, and a neutral presence would help. The reasons are as individual as each person's life — there's no wrong reason to want a death doula by your side.

How is doula care different from hospice?+

Hospice is a specific kind of medical care for the last six months of life, governed by strict criteria and focused on managing medical needs and symptoms. I work alongside your hospice team, offering emotional, practical, and planning support that complements their care — not medical care, and not a replacement for it. End-of-life doulas aren't regulated by any governing body, which means I can shape care around your needs, not a fixed timeline or set of criteria.

When should I reach out — is it too early, is it too late?+

Neither — there's no wrong moment to start this conversation. Some families reach out months before a diagnosis becomes urgent; others reach out in the final days. Both are the right time. Some come to complete end-of-life planning documents with a doula's support and vision. Some are healthy but want meaningful conversations to prepare for their own future. Others simply have questions about who in the community can help, and I can point them toward the right "helpers."

Do you provide medical care?+

No. This is a non-medical role. My nursing and social work background informs everything I do, but as your doula I don't provide medical care — I work collaboratively with your hospice team, physicians, and caregivers. I have relationships with several home care agencies in the community and can help you figure out what you need to maximize the quality of your life.

Where do you work?+

I'm based in and primarily serve Marin County, with some work across the greater San Francisco Bay Area. I do offer virtual support over zoom and telephone so don't let geography limit you. Reach out and we can talk about whether I can support you where you are.

What does it cost?+

Consultations are complimentary, and fees are flexible and offered on a sliding scale — I also reserve time for pro bono work. Cost should never be the reason someone goes without support; we'll talk it through together.

What happens in a first conversation?+

We talk — about where things stand, what's weighing on you, and what kind of support might actually help. There's no obligation, and no pressure to decide anything on that first call.
